Shifa from Qur'anic Verses: Al-Fatihah

The Opening Surah… opens the gates between Allah, the Almighty, and His servant.

Unlike the other surahs which were revealed only once, it is reported that Surah Al-Fatihah was revealed twice; once in Makkah (as stated by Ibn Abbas, Qatadah and Abu’l-Aliyah) and once in Madinah (as stated by Abu Hurairah radi’Allahu anhu, Mujahid, ‘Ata ibn Yasar and Az-Zuhri) [3] even when most resources mentioned that the Surah was revealed to Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam in Makkah [1][5]. Millions of Muslims all over the world recite Al-Fatihah at least 17 times a day and more, Alhamdulillah. It is said that prayer will be invalid if al Fatihah is not recited in prayers [5], as narrated by ‘Ubâdah bin As-Sâmit,  Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said,“Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No. 723).

“And We have bestowed upon thee the Seven Oft-repeated (verses) and the Grand Qur'an.”- Surah Al-Hijr (15:87)

Known by many names; Umm Al-Kitab (Mother of the Book), al-Hamd (the Praise), as-Sab’al-Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses- composed of seven verses frequently recited before every unit of raka’at), ash-Shifa’ (the Healing), al-Kafiyah (the Sufficient One), and al-Asas (the Foundation), al-Kanz (the Treasure), ar-Ruqya (the Spiritual Cure), Surah Al-Fatihah is a man’s prayer while the rest of the Qur’an is Allah’s response, guiding us towards the Siratul-Mustaqeem (success in both this life and the Hereafter)[3].

Umm Al-Kitab is divided into 2 parts; the first half of Surat Al Fatihah is a declaration of monotheism and the second half of the Surah is the most important dua(supplication) a person could ever make[5]. Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said:"Allah ,the Exalted, said,'I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant. A half of it is for Me and a half for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.''If  he says.'All praise and thanks be to Allah, The Lord of existence .'Allah says,'My servant has praised me.'.When the servant says, The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' Allah says.'My servant has glorified Me.' When he says, Master of the Day of Judgment.' Allah says,'My servant has glorified Me.' When he says,'You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.' Allah says,'This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he sought.' When he says,'Guide us to the straight path. The way of those whom You have granted Your grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, or of those who went astray', Allah says,'This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he has asked for.'[6]

Among the many virtues of Surah Al-Fatihah, being the Ruqya is one of them. As narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri radi’Allahu anhu, some of the companions of the Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam's companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatihah and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam (whether it is lawful)." When they asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatihah is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me." - Sahih Bukhari, Book #71, Hadith #632.

According to Ustaz Sharhan Shafie, while reciting the Surah for Shifa purposes, one needs to make a du’a in silent while reciting one of the verse of the Surah, emphasizing on ayat number 5. Even whenever we are lost, feeling wary, we may recite verse number 6 and In Shaa Allah, Allah will guide and show what is good for us.

What makes Al-Fatihah particularly distinctive as compared to any other Surahs? According to Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) who reported that when Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam asked Ubayy ibn Ka’ab (radiAllahu anhu), ”Do you want me to teach you a Surah the like of which has not been revealed in the Torah, the Injeel, the Zabur, nor the Qur’an?”, and also asked what he recited in his prayers. He replied Umm-ul Qur’an (Surah Fatihah) Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam proclaimed, ’By Him in whose dominion my soul is, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Qur’an and it is seven of the oft-repeated verses in the Mighty Qur’an which I have been given’ [at-Tirmidhi, Al-Hakim says that this hadith is Sahih on the conditions established by Imam Muslim (Tafseer Mazhari 1:30)]

Allah knows best and I know nothing.

Lesson and Wisdom from Qur'an:Creation of the Flies

Amazing ingenuity possessed by some animals, such as wolves, flies and spiders. Wolves, when in hunger and not able to hunt for any food, would pretend to be dead. By inflating its abdomen, the birds would thought that it was dead and so went down to eat the carcasses. This will be the golden opportunity for the wolves to have its food. Lets not forget about the sophisticated and intrigued spider, who nets a trap, sits comfortably in the middle of the web waiting for its prey. Once a mosquitoe or flies are trapped, quickly the spider jumped and suck their blood. Spiders are built this way, to hunt with nets and traps.

Do not underestimate the lesson from something that looked and sounded trivial, like the mustard seed or even mosquitoes. The wisdom, the meaningful reasoning can be drawn from something that’s seems trivial. By underestimating the lesson, the wisdom behind every single creations is the legacy of those who refused to accept why Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala explained reasoning behind each creation by comparing the life of the flies, spiders, dogs, donkeys, until Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala revealed this in  Surah Al – Baqarah, verse number 26.

"Verily, Allah is not ashamed to set forth a parable even of a mosquito or so much more when it is bigger (or less when it is smaller) than it. And as for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord, but as for those who disbelieve, they say: "What did Allah intend by this parable?" By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. And He misleads thereby only those who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah)."

What an abundance of hikmah hidden behind the creations of these animals mentioned, of which we often takes as of no importance. How many dalils or texts that explains about the Creator Himself, about His Mercy and His Wisdom. And ask these to the non-believers, Who have given these animals such intelligence, such act to even catch a prey, let alone their survival with such little strength? None other than Allah, the Most Gracious, the Merciful and the One who Notifies. - Ibn Qayyim Al-Jauziyyah, Miftahu Daris Sa’adati, Juz 2, 1416H/1996 M: 153-154)

Narrated by Abu Hurairah radi'Allahu anhu Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, "When a fly perched on a drink of one of you, let it sink into the drink, because on one of its wings it carries a disease and on the other has its cure." – Hadith Riwayat Al-Bukhari.

This explanation is further supported by another authentic source of hadith. Narrated by Abu Sa'eed al - Khudri , the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, " On one of the fly’s wings lies the poison and the other has its cure. Therefore, when it fell on the food, then sink it into it, for when the fly perched on the food, it’ll let go of the poison first and follows by the antidote." – Hadith Ibn Majah. ( Abu Anas Majid, Sahih At-Tibbi An-Nawawi fi Dhaw’i’l Kitabi wa As-Sunnati wa Aqwali As-Salafi, t.t. 119)

Shifa from Qur'anic Verses: The Placebo Effect

There's a narrated story of a doctor who treated his patients who suffered from major diseases. The doctor advised his patients (together with the prescribed medicines to be taken on time) some verses of the Qur'an for their treatment.

The patients never did ask the doctor further when he handed them some black seeds (nigella sativa) to be taken in small amount after meal, but followed his advise diligently. Months passed and so one of the patient (who is a diabetic patient) came to the clinic for his scheduled appointment. With much awe, the patient expressing his gratitude to the doctor , thanking him for prescribing the medicine to lower his sugar levels. Masha'Allah, he skipped the major operation to amputate his feet.

Little did the patient know that the doctor never did give him any medicine,.. but just bunch of placebo, together with the black seeds. So, what did cures him? Lets ponder on this... In Shaa Allah.

Allah has never created a disease but created its treatment, that is known by some people and unknown to others, except death. (At-Tabarani).

"Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful." (Abu Dawud)

"And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." -Surah Al-Isra' (17:82).

Does that mean Allah do not encourage us to visit the physicians?

Again, this was an outstanding progressive piece of advice 14 centuries ago that could only come from the divine guidance of Allah. The reaction of the surprised early Muslims is depicted by the following narrations:

At the time of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam , a man fell ill. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, "Summon the physician of the tribe so and so for him." (Ahmad)

Once Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam visited a sick person. He said, "Call a physician for him." One of the attendants said, "Even you say this, Prophet of Allah?" Prophet Muhammad replied, "Yes." (Al-Bukhari)

Yet, as a precaution to lessen the probability of infection, Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam warned Muslims against associating with the sick:

"A sick person should not be taken to one who is healthy." (Al-Bukhari) [2]We shouldn't rely on the beliefs that it is the prescribed medicines that has healed us, rather the Shifa was given to us from Allah. A question to ask ourselves, are we committing shirk by doing this? Relying on others besides Allah? When we believe and have faith in Allah's Words in the Qur'an, In Shaa Allah, Allah will grant us Shifa. But, if we merely reciting Qur'an, not learning its meaning (tadabbur), not applying it in our daily life, then, what's the use of it?

Here are more supplications one can recite for seeking healing, as mentioned in the Sunnah:

1) Allahumma rabba an-nas, adh-hib il-ba'sa, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqaman. (O Allah, O Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and send down cure and healing, for no one can cure but You; so cure in such a way that no trace of illness is left.) (Muslim)

2) As'alu Allaha Al-`Azhim, Rabba Al-`Arshi Al-Azhim, an yashfiyak. (I beseech Allah, the Great, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you). (At-Tirmidhi)

3) A`udhu bi `izzati Allahi wa qudratihi mimma ajidu wa uhadhir. (I seek refuge and protection in the august might and power of Allah from the pain and illness I am suffering from and I am afraid of). (Ibn Majah)

Qur'anic Verses for Shifa

"Fight against them so that Allah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people" - Surah At-Tawbah (9:14)

"O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Quran, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, - a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers." - Surah Yunus (10:57)

"Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)." There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think." - Surah An-Nahl (16:69)

"And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss."- Surah Al-Isra' (17:82)

"And when I am ill, it is He who cures me"- Surah Ash-Shuaraa (26:80) *Du'a Nabi Ibrahim alaihi salam.

"And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place."- Surah Fussilat (41:44).

Verily, the Qur'an is sent to us as a healing and mercy, except for death.Allah knows best and I know nothing.

Golden Advises for Muslim Wives and their Roles

i) Solat/ namaz on time (reason being; ONE, try not to delay solat/ namaz fearing that when we delay one until the next fardhz namaz time, we will have our menses, and with that, we still need to qada' our solat/ namaz, SECONDLY, when you received an unexpected guests at home and that can causes you to delay your namaz, THIRDLY, for pregnant Muslimah, fearing that you will give birth before you could even pray your namaz, and FOURTH, not the least of importance, fearing death will invite you while you're in the state of delaying your namaz/ solat)
ii) Istiqamah (attend taleem and give ta'lum, meaning, to attend ilm gathering for women and teaches/ share what you've learned from such gathering; recite Qur'an often and reflect on one's good deeds and bad ones too)
iii) Much zikrullah as women tend to wonder and think about matters of no weigh and importance for the goodness of her Deen in her mind.
iv) Educate and nurture their children according to the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
v) Live in simplicity; Not being spendrift, getting things according to our needs and not wants.
vi) Tableegh; spread da'wah and be a walking da'wah.

5 Roles of a Muslim Wife/ Muslim Women to her Family members (especially husband, brothers and children)

i) Encourage husband to attend halaqah sessions and share it at home whenever possible.
ii) Encourage husband, male family members to perform prayers for all FIVE fardhz solat/ namaz at the masjid if possible, remind them, push them if you can, if they do not go for one, no worries, at least you have done your part and you will earn sawab In Shaa Allah)
iii) Spend time at the masjid, at least a couple of hours in minimum, In Shaa Allah (for husband and other male family members)
iv) Encourage husband to give taleem at home and attend one too at the masjid. Discuss with him on any matters pertaining Deen in order to strengthen the bond between the husband and the wife. Isn't that marriage completes half of our Deen too?
v) Encourage husband to go out and join the tableeghi at least 3 days in a month.

In Shaa Allah.

The Ethical Debate/ Refute Encouraged In Islam

In a fruitful debate we discover facts. And by debating we identify our weaknesses. By debating also, we strive to be humble and accept that knowledge of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is Subhan'Allah wide and great, beyond our understanding and comprehension. Once the questions on debating/refute in Islam has crossed our mind, it is our duty or rather responsibilities to find out, to discover proven facts (mentioned in Qur'an and Hadiths and supported by both) before claiming that it is not encouraged by putting our own fatwas in the matter.

The objective of debate, according to Al-Thahabi: "A debate is only justified to unveil truth, so that the more knowledgeable should impart knowledge to the less knowledgeable, and to stimulate a weaker intellect."[10]

'A'isha radi Allahu anha reported Allah's Messenger sallallahu alaihi wassalam, as saying: The most despicable amongst persons in the eye of Allah is one who tries to fall into dispute with others (for nothing but only to display his knowledge and power of argumentation)-Sahih Muslim 2668 In-book reference  : Book 47, Hadith 6. From this Hadith, it is understood that, silence should be the paramount choice when we are debating with an ignorant. However, should we be in silence when we know the facts and we ignore it? The part of spreading dakwah is to speak the truth so as to not let people left misguided. [6]

But what if we don’t know what to debate on?

That’s when we stay quiet. Even the Companions of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wassalam would humbly say,"No, I don't know" rather than giving their opinions on Deen, which is one topic that they highly regarded and understood that they might not have a learned knowledge of (Al-Baihaqi). This is in fact, one of the noble characteristics of learned ulama'. By saying “I don’t know” is also consider as half of knowledge. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood radiAllahu anhu said, "Whoever has some knowledge then let him speak and whoever does not have knowledge with him, then let him say "Allah knows best" because Allah said to His Prophet: "Say, I do not ask you for any reward for this and I am not one to invent and add extra things". This was the manner of the pious predecessors, the Salafus-Saalih: the Companions, the Taabi'een and those who followed them upon their good until the Day of Resurrection. [1], [5]. When a person have asked you a question to be clarified, answer them to the best of your knowledge rather than putting them down.

Some claimed that debating is not encouraged in Islam. Imagine if we do not debate? When facts being falsified, and we do know for a fact that it is wrong, do we just keep quiet about it? We need to debate that they are wrong by presenting the rightful information before we intend to spread the truth. Are we saving on our ego by discouraging debate? Imagine a class where the teacher does not allow even for a Q&A session?

Iblis's egotism was clear when he said that he was better than Adam alaihisalaam. Hasan al-Basri Rehhmatullah Alaih has said, "Iblis was the first one to deduce a conclusion through reasoning." Muhammad bin Sirin Rehhmatullah Alaih has said,"Iblis was the first one to reason and the sun and the moon were not worshipped except through reasoning."[7]

From Surah An-Nahl (16:125-126) stated that,"Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided. And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient." [8]

From the verses, Islam encourage us to debate/ refute with those of unclear understanding of what is the proven facts. Islam prohibited debating on the words of Allah ( Astaghfirullah!) as it has already mention in many verses of Qur'an, and to start with Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256), "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing." Meaning that, words of Allah are the truth and so debating is for those who do not believe in His words. 'Abdullah b. 'Umar radiAllahu anhu reported:"I went to Allah's Messenger, sallallahu alaihi wassalam in the morning and he heard the voice of two persons who had an argumentation with each other about a verse. Allah's Messenger sallallahu alaihi wassalam came to us (and) the (signs) of anger could be seen on his face. He said: Verily, the (peoples) before you were ruined because of their disputation in the Book." - Sahih Muslim 2666 In-book reference  : Book 47, Hadith 2.[6],[8]

Do the Prophets ever debate?

It was narrated that 'Amr bin Dinar radiAllahu anhu heard Tawus say: "I heard Abu Hurairah radiAllahu anhu narrating that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wassalam said: 'Adam and Musa alaihisalam debated, and Musa said to him: "O Adam, you are our father but have deprived us and caused us to be expelled from Paradise because of your sin." Adam said to him: "O Musa, Allah chose you to speak with His own Hand. Are you blaming me for something which Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me?" Thus Adam won the argument with Musa.'" (Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah - Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 80)[6]

Subhan'Allah... Even Jannah and Jahannum debated. Abu Hurairah radiAllahu anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wassalam) said:"Paradise and the Fire debated. Paradise said: “The weak and the poor shall enter me,' and the Fire said: 'The tyrants and the proud shall enter me.” So He said to the Fire: “You are My Punishment, I take vengeance through you from whom I will,” and He said to Paradise: “You are My Mercy I show mercy through you to whom I will.'” (Hasan)- Jami` at-Tirmidhi,Vol. 4, Book 12, Hadith 2561. [6]

When it is best to debate?

Of course and it is best when we are knowledgeable about the topics. Shaykh Kamal ad-Din Ibn az-Zamlakani, who debated with Ibn Taymiyyah rehhmatullah alaih on more than one occasion, said: "Whenever he was questioned on a particular field of knowledge, the one who witnessed and heard (the answer) concluded that he had no knowledge of any other field and that no one possessed such as his knowledge. The jurists of all groups, whenever they sat with him, they would benefit from him regarding their own schools of thought in areas they previously were unaware of. It is not known that he debated anyone whereby the discussion carne to a standstill or that whenever he spoke on about a particular field of knowledge - whether it be related to the sciences of the Shari'ah or else - that he would not then excel the specialists of that field and those who are affiliated to it." [3]

When not to debate?

Abu Hurairah radiAllahu anhu narrated: "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wassalam came out to us while we were discussing about Al-Qadar. He became angry such that his face became red, as if a pomegranate was bursting through his cheeks. He said: 'Is this what I ordered you to do?' - or: 'Is this what I have been sent to you with? The people before you were only ruined when they differed about this matter. I order you [I order you] to not debate about it.". (Daif))- At-Tadmidhi,Vol. 4, Book 6, Hadith 2133.[6]

We have to keep in mind that, the intention to debate is to uncover the truth so as to not misguide the people around us. It is best in our intention to not boast about our knowledge, but to humbly show or share with people what is right and what is not.

Allah knows best, and I may be wrong.

If these clouds could talk too...

I have always been fascinated with clouds. One of the many creations of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. It seems to me that these clouds is telling us their stories, for they've travelled with the wind, spreading calms and vibrant aura surrounds them.

I started off by taking pictures of amazing clouds that really captures my (and hopefully yours too In Shaa Allah) eyes. The best among the pictures combined and shared in this blog, though many more should follow. I studied and read about clouds in Qur'an later on. Its amazing to realize that no creations of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala escaped from being mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, Subhan'Allah!

Among the verses of the Holy Qur'an that mentioned about CLOUDS specifically as follows:-

"And one of His signs is that He shows you the lightning for fear and for hope, and sends down water from the clouds then gives life therewith to the earth after its death; most surely there are signs in this for a people who understand"- Surah Ar-Rum (30:24)

"And if you ask them Who is it that sends down water from the clouds, then gives life to the earth with it after its death, they will certainly say, Allah. Say: All praise is due to Allah. Nay, most of them do not understand."- Surah An-Ankabut (29:63)

"Who made the earth a resting place for you and the heaven a canopy and (Who) sends down rain from the cloud, then brings forth with it subsistence for you of the fruits; therefore do not set up rivals to Allah while you know."- Surah al-Baqarah (2:22)

"Have they not seen that We drive the water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?"-Surah As-Sajdah (32:27)

Whenever I feel down, somewhat it calms me to stare at the clouds. And In Shaa Allah, whenever we get the chance to admire Allah's creations, lets not forget to recite much tasbih... Subhan'Allah!

1435 Deeds of Deen Calendar

Dear beloved families and friends,

Attached herewith, a Hijri calendar for us to keep track of our good deeds, In Shaa Allah (for us to keep track of each one of them, so not to miss it this year, hopefully the deed itself will not be exhaustive).

Alhamdulillah, the calendar are filled with reminders from selected hadiths, zikrullah, du'as, and important dates in Muslim's year. Also included, the significant meaning, events happened in each month, and brief description of the holy wars in the history.

Appreciate feedback (if there's any), should there be any mistake in the calendar or suggestions (much appreciated) for future references.

Hope it benefits everyone In Shaa Allah.

Jazakallah khair.

Wassalam & Warm regards,

Saleena V.E.O Abdul Kader
